Common Core writing questions and standards are all related to a some type of stimulus. There are no isolated questions. The following activity, “Effects of grade completion” uses data found on collegeboard.com and U.S. Census information as the prompt for students. Students will graph the given data, calculate multiple types of regression, and determine which regression is the best fit for the data. This requires connecting literacy work with college and career readiness expectations as outlined in Common Core Writing Standards for Literacy in History/ Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects 6-12. “Effects of grade completion” practices the use of introducing precise, knowledgeable claims, using discipline-specific words, phrases, and clauses to link and clarify claims and reasons, and providing a concluding statement that follows from or supports the argument presented.
The activity was used as a calculator portion of an exam for Algebra II but could be used with almost no changes as individual in-class work, small group work, or an activity for a substitute.
