This Project is one I created for my Algebra students to complete.
The Project requires the students to choose a major, research 5 colleges, find a part time job, calculate and graph how many hours they need to work to afford their first semester of college, and reflect on the process. I had the students call around to local businesses to see if they would hire a 16/17 year old and if so the hourly rate. The assumption in this project is that the students are juniors saving for their first semester of college. Using their parents contribution (amount based on in state or out of state school) as a y intercept and their hourly rate as a slope the students are asked to create a y=mx + b equation to determine the number of hours they must work to earn enough money for their first year of college.
This is a wonderful project that the students really enjoy and get into. I have them present as well!
This is typed in Microsoft Word so you can edit if need be.
