This activity can be used in two ways:
1) Each student is given one of the equations to solve. After solving their equation, each student walks around the room to find their numerical solution. Two students should be standing or sitting by each numerical solution. Then the pair of students trade cards to verify each other’s solution.
2) This set of cards could be used as a traditional matching exercise. Give each group of students all of the cards. Each group solves all of the equations and then matches the cards that have equal solutions.
In order to be successful with this activity, students need to be able to solve multi-step equations and work with simple fractions.
There are thirty cards with equations included. I have included a blank set of cards if the teacher should wish to add more equations.
Answer key included.
If the teacher should choose to have students work all of the problems, a chart to record answers is included. This record sheet provides easy grading for the teacher. Students should show work on another sheet.
This would be great for a back to school activity for a class that knows how to solve multi-step equations. However, it could be used any time of year.
