This resource is designed to help promote independent learning within your classroom. This 9 page booklet allows your students to decide where to begin on their journey to understanding substitution. Each member of your group can be given a booklet and then asked to decide which rung they are to begin on (allowing for your brightest student to attempt more challenging work immediately), after they choose they turn to the page relevant to that particular rung. On each rung students will find a guided example, some practice questions and some assessment questions. Students are instructed to read/follow the guided example and then attempt as many practice questions as they feel are necessary for them to understand what to do, after which they mark what they have done (answers are at the back of the booklet). Once they have done this they test themselves by attempting the assessment questions, marking them and then deciding if they are able to move on to the next rung of the ladder.
A very useful way of allowing your students to work independently in the lesson. It also allows you to differentiate the tasks right from the beginning of your lesson and gives them the opportunity to get into the 'flow' straight away instead of listening to you at the board for too long.
