*Requires coloured dice for game*
These cards have many possible uses when learning basic algebra! 4 levels included to allow for differentiation. They can be printed on colour and laminated or just handed out on white for the students to cut out (in case your like me and downloading something 5 minutes before the lesson!
The game instructions are included. Here is a brief overview:
Students roll 2 dice each and substitute the numbers into the card their card. All students in the group have do this at the same time. They then have an opportunity to check each other’s with a calculator, and gain a bonus 5 points if they find an error in their partner’s work.
They then move on to their second turn and add their answer to their previous. At the end of the timer, the highest score wins. They must ensure they have the same amount of turns each, eg it is not a race of who is the fastest.
- Have the cards turned up the correct way, students choose the cards. This encourages critical thinking, which card should I use when I get double 6? Which card would be good when I get a low B and a high R?
- Like Terms – students pick out a number of cards eg 3 and must add the cards together by combing like terms. Eg. b+3 + 5b-r + 4r+3 = 6b + 3r +6
- Modified options – students who struggle with basic operations could use a calculator and focus on learning algebra.
- Switch students around after each game, they learn best from each other!
