Evaluate expressions, combine like terms, and solve equations with this handout and a set of algebra tiles. Students are given space to draw representations of their algebra tiles and to write the procedures for each problem. There is also a word problem which asks them to write an equation to represent a situation and solve it using algebra tiles.
This sheet was designed to accompany the Algebra Tiles PowerPoint in my TpT store, but it can stand alone if you are familiar with these manipulatives. I used it for several years before I created the PowerPoint presentation. To make it fit in our interactive notebooks, I set the copy machine to reduce the pages to 80% then trimmed the extra edges.
There is not an answer key with this handout because the modeling, process, and solutions are displayed on the PowerPoint show. As I go through the lesson I have the students say what property they are using for each step of solving the equations. The repetitiveness of naming the properties helps them remember them.
*algebra tiles are not included
