This is a fun vocabulary puzzle that helps students become more fluent in defining the words that are so important for their success in algebra. You can cut out the puzzle and laminate the pieces for a reusable station, or just have the students cut them out.

Includes:

  • 19 vocabulary word puzzle in mixed up order
  • Solution page
  • Student reflection sheet

*I usually have the first class cut them out, then save them for the next classes so the next classes don't have to spend time cutting them out.

The pieces are numbered so you can make sure all the pieces are there! This also helps if you want to discuss a word - you can tell them what piece to find.

The kids are always motivated to get the puzzle put together first. Even the answers that are used help students, as they have to discuss what the word means to figure out that the definition is not there.

Attend to precision. Mathematically proficient students try to communicate precisely to others. They try to use clear definitions in discussion with others and in their own reasoning. They state the meaning of the symbols they choose, including using the equal sign consistently and appropriately. They are careful about specifying units of measure, and labeling axes to clarify the correspondence with quantities in a problem. They calculate accurately and efficiently, express numerical answers with a degree of precision appropriate for the problem context. In the elementary grades, students give carefully formulated explanations to each other. By the time they reach high school they have learned to examine claims and make explicit use of definitions.
