I used this as a capstone project at the end of a geometry course I taught about 10 years ago. I looked at it again and feel it is appropriate for algebra or geometry.
Students take a yard next to a house and plan the construction of a deck. They must follow the building codes but have great leeway on the shape/style. Students must plan the positioning of the support posts, the beams, the top boards, the railings, the landscaping, etc… A price sheet is included.
This took my students 5-8 days. A sample project is included.
About 9 years ago I switched schools and I was offered a position at every school where I showed student work samples from this project. Administrators were blown away. I hope you have a similarly positive experience with this project.
This project is great – but so are all my other resources.
