This is a set of 48 task cards designed to be used with manipulatives for children to build equations. This set emphasizes how coefficients work in basic algebraic equations including a single variable. There are 2 sets (24 cards in each), using identical equations.
Using the first set of cards, the kids are solving equations with variables represented as shapes, and blocks with numbers representing the other terms. The coefficients are shown as either 2 times a quantity or 3 times a quantity.
The second set of cards are the same problems from the first deck, but represented using numbers and variables. The cards could be paired to show both representations for children who are having difficulty understanding which terms can be simplified. I often have students who don't understand that 2x and 2 represent something different.
I have used these cards with fifth grade students who have learned how to represent equations with manipulatives and are working through a way to simplify equations with or without manipulatives by removing like terms. This set of cards brings up the difficulty level because of the inclusion of the coefficients. All answers are solvable for positive, whole number results.
Each set of task cards has the answer key and an answer sheet (which are identical, since the problems are identical). It is in PDF format and consists of 16 pages. The task cards are 4 per page (6 pages per deck for 2 sets of 24 cards each), and there are 2 recording sheets (identical) and 2 answer key sheets (identical).
