In this activity, students will look at a real-life restaurant situation and, using their knowledge of algebraic expressions and patterning, will attempt to solve and bring forth a viable solution for what they would do.
This activity is especially helpful for students who need more of a real-life connection to what they are learning. Often times, algebraic expressions and patterning are distant and difficult to understand topics. This activity helps bring more meaning to it.
In my experience, this activity could be done over a 60-minute period or extended over two 40-minute periods. It could also be used as an assessment after an initial introduction to the Algebra and Patterning Unit or used as a diagnostic test prior to the introduction.
