Valentine's Day with the Suffragists

Bring your students back 100 years ago to when Alice Paul’s Congressional Union (later known as the National Woman’s Party) used a unique tactic to get the attention of President Woodrow Wilson and lawmakers. Also includes a re-usable primary source analysis printable that can be used any time of the year!
Picketing a President, by Doris Stevens
Doris Stevens, a member of the NWP, recounts the beginning of the NWP pickets at the White House. Text-dependent questions accompany the adapted primary source reading passage.
On August 14, 1917, the NWP was attacked by an angry mob of men for their banner addressed to “Kaiser Wilson.” This resource contains two adapted primary source accounts of the shocking event. One source is a newspaper report, and the other is by Doris Stevens, a member of the NWP. Also included is a compare and contrast activity.
