The following 4-page document is a pre-reading and during-reading guide or packet on Alice Walker's short story "Everyday Use." The anticipation guide is on the first page and lists five statements that students will have to make opinions on before and after the text that relate to the work's themes. The second and third pages contain questions to guide readers on its characterization (mostly indirect), figurative language, idioms, plot, and author's style and use of punctuation. The fourth and final page is an activity on symbolism and it challenges readers to explain what some items literally and symbolically mean in the story, including the title of the short story itself. This packet can be used as a formative assessment to prepare for a multiple choice summative assessment that is available as a separate purchase.
