This is a protein synthesis activity that has twenty organism variations. Students will translate their assigned DNA sequence and can use their creativity in creating the final presentation by including the phenotypic characteristics they decoded from the original DNA strands.
To set the mood for the Alien Arthropod Activity, a student instruction power point is included. It will guide your classes through the first few steps to ensure optimal results.
Students begin the activity by isolating the exon genes from the intron genes. The students will then transcribe and translate the DNA codons into amino acid sequences.
The students will use the Alien Arthropod Catalog to match the polypeptide sequences to their assigned organism and use the phenotypes to create a colorful illustration using the thirteen unique characteristics.
I have included two teacher keys, one is a long form which shows the transcription process for each of the 20 alien arthropods, as a result, this key is 20 pages long. You do not really need to print the long one unless you are planning on grading each step of the process, or you could use it as a rubric. You will also receive a graph to help with photocopying.
