"You are a scientist that is working for a new genetics company. Your job is to create an alien life form. You will develop genotypes for each alien parent. From the genotype, you will create a phenotype for each of the parents. In addition, you will create Punnett Squares that show the possibilities of trait combinations in their alien offspring. Lastly, you will draw one of the alien offspring and identify its genotype. There are 13 different traits that you will identify for your aliens!"
This activity provides practical application of ideas related to genetics; genotype, phenotype, gene, allele, Punnett Square, homozygous, heterozygous, and mathematical probability. Also, students do some writing when they create a narrative to describe the phenotypes of aliens. Finally, the activity provides a creative experience when students draw the new alien offspring.
