110 problem sets (3 problems per set) for a total of 330 Problem Based Learning problems.
Problem Situations Included in this Packet: Addition and Subtraction, Unknown Product, Group Size Unknown Partitive Division, Number of Groups Unknown Measurement Division, Mixed Multiplication and Division, Fraction Equal Sharing, Multiple Groups Fractions, Mixed Review Fractions, Problems for Fraction, Equivalence and Order, Problems for Fraction Equivalence and Order, Problems for Decimals, Problems for Rational Thinkers, and Create Your Own. The problems at the beginning are far easier than the problems at the end, so you could go from beginning to end. I like to skip around so students can't predicate what type of problem they will be solving.
Problem Based Learning (PBL) exists as a teaching method grounded in the ideals of constructivism and student centered learning. When using PBL, teachers help students to focus on solving problems within a real-life context, encouraging them to consider the situation in which the problem exists when trying to find solutions. PBL word problems are real-life problems that don’t have a single or pre-determined solution. In this sense, the value of the problem resides in helping students to develop both an understanding of the mathematics and the ability to apply it.
THERE IS NO ANSWER KEY for these problems.
This program can be used in variety of ways. You can go from the beginning to the end or skip around. I made a workbook for my students, and I tend to skip around depending on the needs of my students. I did not include the sheets that told the problem situation type in their student workbook.
I have received extensive training in the PBL method. I have condensed the information I received and included it in this packet. While assessing numerous student work samples, I discovered a lack of cohesion, and I had to spend entirely too long trying to figure out what some students’ answers were. I developed the A.L.I.E.N method to help eliminate confusion. You may choose to teach this method or leave it out entirely.
