Who doesn't need a chemistry activity that makes students laugh? This fresh take on an alien periodic table is fun and funny. Students work to untangle 30 elements to form a partial periodic table based on elemental characteristics.
Time: This is a 90 minute activity, but can easily be shorten to 55 minutes by not having students fill in the ending table matching the elements to earth elements since they can easily see the match when their table is built.
This is a good activity to leave with a substitute and is is perfectly reasonable to count it as a test grade based on the rigor. :) I love things I can leave as a sub with this level of work.
The story line: aliens have been receiving our television signals and fascinated by our news and television productions, named 30 elements after what they've seen. My students laugh over references to The Big Bang Theory, Twighlight, Miley Ray Cyrus, and Lady Gaga.
Students work as a cooperative pair or trio to determine the placement of these elements by their characteristics. When they have completed the table, they match the elements to the earth versions.
