Africa is knowns as the bithplace of civilization. Most cultures started on this large continent. The area is so diverse in its cultures, languages, religions, climates, and animals that you could study it for years, and never learn everything about it.

This unit has 5 main reading comprehension passages. Students SHOW their answers using text evidence and colors! What could be better?

This set covers all of the standards for for Africa based on the Tennessee 3rd grade list. This is an easy to grade set and encourages deep reading of the non-fiction text. Along with the comprehension reading passages there are research opportunities that use QR codes and/or sites. Students can gain independence in their research with teacher-approved sites and safeshare.tv videos. There are map templates for students to use for salt/flour projects.

There are tons of visuals to deepen students' learning and understanding of various concepts.

Standards:
✈️3.46 Interpret different texts and primary sources to describe the major components of history and culture including language, clothing, food, art, beliefs, customs, and music.

✈️3.47 Tell a historic story with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details while speaking audibly in coherent sentences using information gained from timelines, primary sources and informational text. Suggestions are: Ancient Egypt and
the pyramids, Nile River, Tutankhamen, Bartholomew Diaz lands on Cape of Good Hope, Nelson Mandela, and current events.

✈️3.48 Identify major countries of the continent (Egypt, Kenya, Libya, and South Africa).

✈️3.49 Identify major physical features of the continent:
►Rivers – Congo, Niger, Nile
►Mountains – Kilimanjaro, Mt. Kenya, Atlas Mountains
