Solving analogies is a skill that students must be able to master in order to be successful in school and in preparation for college. Analogies are a great way to encourage critical thinking by examining word pairs.
All About Analogies introduces students to the concept of analogies and guides them through seven different types of analogies, including synonyms, part-to-whole, and homophones.
For each of the seven types of analogies, students are given a student-friendly definition and a common example. In addition, students receive three opportunities per type to solve an analogy in a multiple-choice format.
This is a great lesson for introducing analogies through direct teach. You can interact with students, listen to their thinking, allow them to work cooperatively, and allow them to work independently. Students can refer back to the examples as a study guide or test review.
Students who zoom through the examples can be challenged by creating examples for their classmates to solve!
