Character traits lesson plans, posters, printable materials, checklists, and rubrics for your second grade reading workshop!

------

This 110-page unit will help you teach your students strategies for reading and understanding fiction (with a focus on understanding characters). The lessons teach comprehension, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and discussion strategies.

The lessons and materials included in this curriculum will help your students become engaged readers who use strategies flexibly, record their thinking on sticky notes and in reading journals, and share their reading and thinking with other students.

During this unit, your students will learn to:
- Gather information about characters by writing on sticky notes and in their reading journals
- Notice what characters do and say, what their motivations are, how they respond to challenges, and how they treat others
- Discuss and write about characters' feelings, and how those feelings change across a text
- Write a summary of a story
- Discuss and write about characters' points of view and how they change across time
- Read dialogue with expression by inferring character feelings
- Use context clues to figure out the meaning of new words
- Describe characters orally and in writing by using character traits, and supporting those traits with text evidence
- Predict characters' actions by considering character traits, character motivation, and knowledge about characters' past problem-solving
- Infer what a character has learned and connect the lesson or moral to one's own life

Here’s what the unit includes:
- 30 detailed minilessons
- Unit goals and Common Core alignment for each lesson
- Posters to support unit concepts
- Printable materials to accompany the minilessons
- Writing prompts for students to glue into reading journals
- 11 pages of tips and real photographs to help you implement reading workshop in your classroom, learn how to confer with students, and organize your materials.
- 8 pages of printable materials: calendars, note-taking sheets, parent letters (English & Spanish) reading log, and classroom organization tools
- 10 pages of checklists and assessment tools, including lists of concepts to teach during reading conferences and small group instruction
- Suggested texts to use with the lessons
- Questions to support higher-level thinking

Each minilesson will last 10 or 15 minutes and is designed to be taught before students go off to read independently.

The entire unit will last approximately 6-7 weeks.
