PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This Web Trek for Thanksgiving, harvest time, or fall learning focuses not only on the cycles of the corn plant itself, but, through story, the generations of a family who have grown up farming corn. The Web Trek is geared to elementary students (grades 3-6); an answer key and some wonderfully creative extension activities are provided (extension activities briefly outlined below). An answer key is also provided for your convenience.

A History and Culture of Pumpkins student reading comprehension activity is also included in this teaching packet, complete with an answer key.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES:

1. LEARN HOW TO MAKE A CORN HUSK DOLL FOR THANKSGIVING:

Find illustrated, four step directions here on how to use dried corn husks and make a pioneer-style doll.

2. CREATE SOME CORN TRIVIA CARDS OR BROCHURES:

Find all sorts of amazing corn-y facts to use for your trivia cards, or work in small student groups to make corn brochures.

3. MAKE A CLASSROOM CORN HISTORY TIMELINE:

How has corn been used throughout history? Make a clothesline timeline, string on some dried husks at various regular intervals, with corn facts and dates written on the husks themselves!

4. LABEL THE PARTS OF A CORN PLANT: (see resource links with web trek)

Go over the parts of a corn plant with your students, and then use this worksheet (scroll to end of page) to have them practice labeling the different parts, or ask them to make one of their own, life-sized for your classroom door.

5. GO DEEPER: LEARNING WITH CORN ACROSS THE CURRICULUM:
