All About Owls- NEWLY REVISED (October 2016)
This packet will help your kindergarten and first grade students learn, understand, and practice using the science terms used when talking about owls. It also will provide you with resources to make your unit come to life. By integrating science and nonfiction into your language lessons, you not only create an enthusiasm in your students, but you can create the "hook" you need to engage even the most reluctant learners.
This packet is aligned to the NGSS standards as well as the Texas TEKS. (They are included in the packet for you to reference as well as at the top of the lesson plans!) It includes many resources including: fully written out 5-E lesson plans, 3- part cards, pocket chart cards, (both featuring high quality pictures) student vocabulary books, center activities, posters, recording pages, science activities/projects, and so much more!
In using this pack, students will meet these objectives:
-Students will learn that owls are nocturnal.
-Students will learn where owls live.
-Students will learn about an owl’s anatomy.
-Students will learn facts about owls.
-Students will become familiar with a few vocabulary words: owlet, nocturnal, facial disc, beak, talon, owl pellet, habitat, wingspan, rotation, nest, camouflage, plumage.
There are many opportunities for your students to use this engaging topic to research and write about what they are learning. The packet includes activities, recording pages, mini books, and more!
The 5-E lesson plans included are:
1. Owls are nocturnal.
2. Parts of an owl— owl adaptations
3. Different types of owls— How big can they get?
4 Where do owls live?
5. Owls are raptors.
6. What do owls eat? Dissecting owl pellets.
All lessons are presented in the 5-E format. (engage, explore, explain, elaborate, evaluate) They are written out step by step! Each lesson also comes with beautiful pictures and engaging activities to help your children understand the objectives in a hands-on way. Many of the lessons also contain links to videos and resources to use while teaching the lesson! (There are also owl cards with QR codes linked to video resources that will allow students to hear each owl's distinct call and observe specific adaptations.)

This packet includes 5 literacy centers including:
OU/OW word sorts
Parts of Speech Word Sorts (noun, verb, adjective)
Introducing and using owl vocabulary words
It includes 4 math centers that work on:
addition and subtraction
(sorting sums and differences by even and odd answers)
a version of bump (with doubles)
word problems (sorting addition and subtraction problems)
It works on writing informative texts, topic sentences, and adding details to writing.
This packet also includes recording sheets and a lab book for owl dissections! I could not include the actual bone chart due to copyright reasons but you can go to the website included in my packet to print one out! I also included a parent permission slip in case you would like to do this science experiment in class.
This packet also includes a page of resources to use when teaching about owls!
