Rocks and minerals are naturally fascinating for young children- how many times have you had to ask your students to empty out their pockets and leave the rocks outside after recess?! They love making observations, learning about the three types of rocks, and discovering that rocks are all around them in objects they use every day. However, when I was starting out as a teacher, my background knowledge about rocks and minerals was fairly limited. That’s why I put together this packet- to make my life as a first grade teacher just a little easier. I hope it does the same for you!
In this file, you’ll find:
-Fact cards and headings for the 3 kinds of rocks
-9 example cards (3 for each type of rock)
-“Rock Sort” handout
-“My Rock Research Report” handout and rock pictures
-“Properties of Rocks” handout for making observations
-“All About Rocks” writing paper with line and picture options
-Facts about rocks writing paper with line options
-8-page “My Rock Book”
