“All Across the USA” is a colorful social studies project for middle schoolers that challenges them to find images that represent all 50 American states. These images can then be used to decorate a digital map.
The assignment tests students ability to:
• Practice research on the internet
• Refine their graphic art skills on the computer
• Demonstrate their knowledge of American geography and history
The project is designed for Apple computers because the map is formatted as a Pages Document and requires the use of the “Alpha” tool. (The map template is also available as a jpeg and a PDF in case teachers who do not have Apple computers wish to rework the project to fit their computer equipment.) Other documents and images included in this unit are formatted as jpegs and PDFs. The unit includes four pages of teacher instructions, a student rubric, a map template for students to decorate, and an illustrated sample of a decorated map.
