This resource is a multi-day research and writing project. In it you will receive a detailed lesson plan, 6 non-fiction mini-readers, research booklets, a brochure template or optional poster board headings, as well as both student and teacher assessments that go along with the BC Curricular competency of Communication.
We spent the last two years living in Egypt and traveling around that area a lot! All of the picture you will see in the mini-readers are pictures that we took on our travels. This project will get your students excited about the world and get them to research about an area that they may not know much about.
The purpose behind this project is for students to focus on learning the non-fiction text features as well as writing a non-fiction information piece about a country. This project can be used from grade 2 to 7. In the upper elementary grades, you can use the mini-readers as examples of good informational text writing and get them to research a new country and create their own mini-reader.
An extension activity could be for the students to design a postcard from that country and write on the back what it is like; linking it to personal writing. The extensions for this project are nearly endless. If you want more ideas, just send us a message!
This project has been designed to meet the requirements of the BC curricular competency of communication as well as social studies and language arts. The assessments would work well for your on-going communication of student learning, portfolios, or student-led conferences.
Enjoy this project and happy teaching!
