“All Kids Need A Place to Call Home,” written by Norma Flores and available @teacherspayteachers.com, is a 10 page lesson in developing Oral Communication Skills by demonstrating Listening, Speaking, Pronunciation and Critical Thinking observable behaviors through Oral Readings of Socially Significant Narrative Stories, Oral Discussion, Dialogues and Pronunciation Improvement Assessment Interactions.

Page 2 features a Vowel Pronunciation Diagram of the mouth and where the vowel sounds [ i ] [ ɪ ] [ ɑɪ ] are produced. Page 3 is the Key To Standard American English Pronunciation chart that describes how to articulate the vowel sounds [ i ] [ ɪ ] [ ɑɪ ] .

Pages 4 & 5 feature an Illustrated Narrative Story for students to take turns reading aloud, while practicing their pronunciation of the featured vowel sounds. The story is about a homeless girl’s problem with not living close to school nor receiving the benefits of free nutrition programs her school offers for her and her whole family.

Page 6 consists of 5 Questions for Discussion of Student’s Opinions, including Student’s Values that encourage students to share their values from their own cultural points of view and explain how the questions are relevant to them.

Page 7, features the Functional Pronunciation Assessment worksheet through which dyads meet to assess each others pronunciation competency of the target sounds. Page 8 is the Assessment of Communication Competence and English Speaking Skills, ACCESS, which rates the speaker’s use of eye contact, audibility, pronunciation, use of word endings, intonation and stress of message function and intention.

Page 9, Lists the Contexts & Standards-Based Criteria for Assessing Pronunciation so that students may understand what level of communication competency they have demonstrated and try again if they need to improve.

Page 10 describes the author’s purpose for instilling Collaborative Multicultural Oral Communication Skills in our society and especially, in our students, here and everywhere.

Thus, “All Kids Need A Place To Call Home,” is a practical, ethical method of teaching Collaborative Oral Communication Skills to all students, especially recent immigrant, non-native Speakers of English and everyone concerned about our communities.
