All Quiet on the Western Front is a must read for students before college. My daughter, who was an honor student, said that of all the books she read in her years at high school, this was the most impactful in her life. All Quiet takes place during World War I, and it is unique because it is written from the "enemy" side. This puts a different slant on the story and war. Most kids have no idea of the perils of war, and this book is reality-based. By far, this novel is more powerful than the Red Badge of Courage, but in our lesson we read a small portion of that novel as well. We also read the first chapter of The Things They Carried to introduce this war unit.
