I use these assignments while I teach a unit on the novel All Quiet On the Western Front. This unit deals a lot with war and its effects on human nature. I show the film, The Thin Red Line, and have students answer and discuss the philosophical ideas presented by the film that relate to All Quiet. Further on in the unit, I have students write an in-class essay. Students get the prompt two days before the in-class essay. They create and outline that I comment on, and this is the only resource they may use. This often leads to detailed outlines! This document includes the following: Group discussion questions for the film The Thin Red Line, an in-class essay prompt about war and human nature, with an outline graphic organizer for the in-class essay.
