Students investigate candy companies use of candy wrappers! Was the candy company wasteful? Did they need that much wrapper for the candy?
This task uses students knowledge of how to find the surface area of rectangular prisms. This task could easily be altered to find the surface area of other shapes using different shaped candy.
Students work in groups to find the surface area of each piece of candy (rectangular prisms) and find the area each wrapper. They will investigate which candy company wastes the most product on their wrappers! For the task you will need individually wrapped candy and rulers. I chose to use caramels, starbursts, gum, now and laters, jolly ranchers, and fun size crunch bars. Each group will only need one piece of each type of candy. You can use less than 6 types of candy per group if you like.
