I was having difficulty collecting decoding data during running records. I either had to spend time copying the text for me to mark up or try to record every word while the child read.
I decided to create a form to allow me to be present during the running record and analyze the data later. I take the running record in the top box (checks for correct words, errors marked as X or other system). I then ask a comprehension question and take notes on the response. I only have room for 6 pages because I found I was not listening to more than that before determining the goal/skill I wanted to address with the child.
After the group, I look through the text to track the child's decoding abilities in the bottom box. I look at each word and determine the word type. I then record if the word was read correctly or incorrectly (using the running record information) and record the correct symbol. It allows me to be present during instruction and still track the data I need for IEP goals and objectives.
I welcome any suggestions or feedback as to how I can make this form easier and more complete!
