I don’t know about you, but I have struggled in the past to find informational text that my kindergartners can read and digest independently. I chose to create 20 different animal texts instead of continuing to pull my hair out! It is up to you how you will use them, but they can be printed out for individual, partnered, or whole-group use, OR projected on the SMART Board for all to see at once! You’ll find that kids will be able to read along with you, too.
The note-taking learning maps are what I created to help my kiddos manage the information they’ve learned, as well as understand the parts of an informational writing piece! They all include sequential parts for a topic sentence, 3 sentences for what the particular animals are, have, and can do, and finally, a closing sentence. There are 3 difficulty levels—the easiest asks students to include only ONE detail for “are, have, and can,” while the hardest asks students to include THREE details each for “are, have, and can.” In using these maps and differentiating when needed, I had all of my students writing a 5-sentence informational paragraph by the end of the year. And oh boy, were they fun and interesting! ☺
The animal information picture reporting map requires students to name the animal about which they have learned, then draw pictures of their habitat, food, adults, and babies. This helps those students who struggle to write what they learned feel successful by drawing what they learned. I always have my kids do both the drawing and the writing, though!
Finally, there are 12 styles of publishing paper included in this pack. There are 3 different animal print borders throughout, with varying line sizes for those kids who just need some more room! Picture boxes are included at the top on some, as well.
Get ready for some WILD writing in your classroom!
