Skip the worksheets! Here is a great idea for teaching long and short vowel sound word families such as ake, ight, all, ing, ack, ill, etc. A great addition to your literacy center and small groups!
12 game boards, 1 spinner sheet, 2 answer key sheets
a game piece per player
(I’ve used cereal, candy, coins, etc.).
Print onto cardstock and/or laminate the boards for durability. Print as many spinners as needed. Spin the spinner. Move that many times on the board. Land on a picture or word and say a word that rhymes. Land on a rime and say a word in that family. Forward arrow-move one space forward. Backward arrow- move one space backward. Extra turn-roll again! The first player to the end wins!
X Board Challenge (up to 4 players)
On the X board players begin and end in the center circle. Players leave the center circle in different directions and move clockwise around the board. If a player needs help with a word, they must go back to the last “phone booth’ and phone a friend for help. This player remains in the phone booth until their next turn.
The first player back to the center circle wins!
