I use this assignment in conjunction with the 2016 HBO film All the Way. The film gives a behind the scenes look at the first year of the Lyndon Johnson administration, and it covers the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, the murder of 3 civil rights workers in Mississippi, and the Election of 1964. I use the film in my Government and Civics class because it illustrates many of the topics we cover with the Executive and Legislative branches of government. The film could also be used effectively in a US History class to connect to some important moments of the Lyndon Johnson presidency and.or the 1960s. The film guide I have provided has background information, an analytical writing assignment, and a rubric. The film usually takes 3 class periods (including Q &A and discussion), but it could take more time depending on the length of your class periods and discussions with students.
