I use this assignment as a summative assessment for our study of the Crucible, but it can be used along with any allegorical text. The students are tasked to create a children's book that stands as an allegory for an aspect of our society, past or present. My students truly enjoyed the opportunity to be creative and collaborative with their peers while also crafting a complex text. I usually preface this activity with a book study of Dr. Seuss. My students must first figure out what literary elements help to establish the allegory using such texts as "The Butter Battle Book" and "Yertle the Turtle". Because of such, I then ask for my students to annotate their children's book with post its for the same elements. This assignment can also be modified and used for any unit.
