How many times have you had your class get frustrated with novels that are too difficult or bored by novels that are too young for them? It's a fine line that second language teachers must follow in challenging our students to read at their comprehension and interest levels.
Aller Retour (Yves Beauchesne et David Schinkel, 1986.) is an excellent novel that teen readers do enjoy. Students relate to the main character, Martin, and read avidly to see what happens next.
This novel study includes pre/during/post activities for each chapter that ensure they are understanding the novel, but also challenge them to read closely and note the literary devices in use. A final essay outline is included as the culminating activity.
