The attached file is a week-long lesson plan designed to go with the first grade Common Core Curriculum Map Unit "Alphabet Books and Children Who Read Them." In my progression, this would be week 4; however, they do not have to be taught in this particular order. This lesson plan is a 5 day plan along with a student packet with a cover page and student activity pages. I have included both PDF and Word versions of each document if you would like to make changes to them.
The plans include: focus standards, vocabulary, essential questions, I can statements and technology links.
The focus standard is:
RL.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
RL.1.3 Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.
RL.1.7 Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.
Students will read stories about the library and focus on the narrative elements, filling out graphic organizers and retelling the stories. Students will discover how important and fun the library can be and encourage others to use the library. They will also continue to work on answering questions using complete sentences and generating questions about the stories using capital letters and question marks.
The books I used for the lessons are (these could be changed):
• “The Library” by Sarah Stewart
• “Tomas and the Library Lady” by Pat Mora
