The attached file is a week-long lesson plan designed to go with the first grade Common Core Curriculum Map Unit "Alphabet Books and Children Who Read Them." In my progression, this would be week 5; however, they do not have to be taught in this particular order. This lesson plan is a 5 day plan along with a student packet with a cover page and student activity pages. There is also a poster to help generate questions about the poems using the five senses. I have included both PDF and Word versions of each document if you would like to make changes to them.
The plans include: focus standards, vocabulary, essential questions, I can statements and technology links.
The focus standard is:
RL.1.4 Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.
RL.1.10 With prompting and support, read prose and poetry of appropriate complexity for grade 1.
Students will read poems about books and reading and discover their meaning using the senses. They will use graphic organizers and draw to show their understanding of the text.
The poems I used for the lessons are (these could be changed):
“Read to Me” by Jane Yolen
“How to Eat a Poem” by Eve Merriam
“Books Fall Open” by David McCord
“Books to the Ceiling” by Arnold Lobel
