The attached file is a week-long lesson plan designed to go with the first grade Common Core Curriculum Map Unit "Alphabet Books and Children Who Read Them." In my progression, this would be week 5; however, they do not have to be taught in this particular order. This lesson plan is a 5 day plan along with a student packet with a cover page and student activity pages. There are links to brainpopjr.com videos if you have access to it. I have included both PDF and Word versions of each document if you would like to make changes to them.
The plans include: focus standards, vocabulary, essential questions, I can statements and technology links.
The focus standard is:
RL.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
RL.1.3 Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.
RL.1.6 Identify who is telling the story at various points in a text.
Students will be introduced to Little Bear and the author of the books. They will discuss who is telling the story at various parts of the book and how they know. They will identify the main character and supporting characters in Little Bear stories and begin to describe the characters. They will review characters and setting as well as continue to practice answering comprehension questions with complete sentences and generating questions about the text using appropriate capital letters and question marks.
The poems I used for the lessons are (these could be changed):
Little Bear’s Visit by Else Holmelund Minarik
A Kiss for Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik
