A cognate is a word that exists in two different languages and has the same root or origin. Cognates are a great way to build upon your student’s L1 and quickly increase his/her English vocabulary.
This set of cognate cards was developed for Spanish speaking ELs who are just beginning to read. Use the cards to introduce letter naming and beginning sounds. Please note that many Spanish letter sounds differ from those in English. For example, the letter j (pronounced HOH-tah) in Spanish makes the sound /h/. The word jungla sounds like hOOHnglah. A good resource to check your Spanish pronunciations is spanishdict.com. Type an English word, then next to the Spanish translation, click the speaker symbol to listen.
Margins are set at 0.25". If your printer requires a larger margin, select "scale to fit" or equivalent.
Cards are arranged four per page. Simply cut in half horizontally and vertically.
