Introduce Higher Order Thinking Earlier with ABC Activities
This ABC fun activity will help you introduce higher order thinking
to your students. How? Well, look around. Your students or children see letters mixed with pictures. They also see different ways letters are printed. With this Alphabet Recognition activity, they will deconstruct letters
mixed with pictures by separating the picture from the letter. I designed all the features of this alphabet activity to help your student or child deconstruct then generalize letters.
#01 - There are two pages for each letter. The first is a whole page, ready-to-color picture
of the letter with one or more objects attached to it. The object represents the sound of the letter (A for apple, B for Bees, and so on). The second page has different activities for the letter.
#02 - Each letter is shown in a serif form which is similar to the big letter with picture. The letter is then placed side-by-side with a smaller version of the big letter with the picture. A third letter is placed besides the two. This time, it is in outline form but without the picture. These 3 versions of the letter will help your student recognize and deconstruct
#03 - There is a fourth version of the letter below, which is in an outlined sans serif form. This will help your student generalize
that the letter that they colored above is basically the same as this simpler version (sans serif fonts do not have any curves). The child can color or trace this also.
#04 - There are dotted versions of the letter which your student can trace.
#05 - Each letter page will help you extend your lesson
. There is a simple phrase with the number and word identifying the object in the picture. For example, the phrase "3 Bees" are with letter B. You can help your student or child find the bees and count them. You can help differentiate
bees from beehive, which is also in the picture.
#06 - The same phrase seen in the big picture page is also on the second page. Your student is given the chance to read the phrase and trace it. Please note that the phrase uses the word version of the number and you will be able to help your student learn the number and word too.
#07 - Lastly, there are embedded directions
on each big letter page. For example, on the letter B page, it asks the child to color the bee on the right, left and middle using specific colors. The words "right, left and middle" are near the specific bees so that your student will be able to match the words.
#08 - It can be used to teach letter sounds
. X has 2 options, one with a xylophone for a word that begins with X. The second is a BOX for the /x/ sound.
