Hi, It's the middle of April and I still have a Kindergarten student who needs lots of work with letter identification. He's very sensitive to the idea that his classmates are reading, but he needs to work on letters.

So ~ I created this set of Alphabet Sentences. We are working with letter identification, but he is very excited to be reading a full page of "real sentences." (Each sentence has the same pattern: _____ is for _____.)

He begins by finding all the "target" letters on the page and tracing them with a thin marker. (On the c page, he will find, trace and say each letter c.)

I am able to point out the upper case letter at the beginning of each sentence and the punctuation at the end of each sentence. He is able to firm up his understanding of voice to print match and return sweep as we work.

Once he has mastered a letter, I sometimes like to "mix it up" so he reads sentences with all the letters he has learned. To do so, I print the pages on tagboard and cut across to create individual sentence strips. I can then give him a pile of sentences with the letters he has been working on. He enjoys reading through the pile, as he experiences a great deal of success.

We work on vocabulary and initial sounds as I introduce the alphabet sentences. At times, he is able to generate two possible words and then select the correct word based on the initial sound. (This was the case when he came across the picture of the jacket. He first said coat, but then when I asked it he could think of another word for the picture that starts with /j/, he was able to come up with jacket.)

When he comes to a word that will be new vocabulary for him, I simply tell him the word and have him clap it with me. We look at how many claps (syllables) the word is and how long the word is.

I'm finding this Alphabet Sentence series very useful, as it helps this student experience a great deal of success. In the fall, I plan to use these sheets as I initially introduce letters.

Thanks so much for stopping by and taking a look!

*** This set includes a page for each letter except for x, y, z. I have combined the sentences for x, y and z onto one page. A parent letter explaining how to support students as they work with these sentences is also included.
