See the preview for all the pages! Short & Long vowels included
This is a great starter or warm-up activity during guided reading groups and it's easily differentiated to meet the needs of all students!
The strips are three to a page but if they seem to big, simply choose "print 2 to a page" under the print option on your computer.
Suggested use: Make a set for each student by laminating the strips and putting them on a binder ring. I start by putting on the letters and sounds we are working on and add to it as needed. I remove strips once my students have mastered them.
The students each go through the pictures on their strips and say the beginning sound for each picture. For example, for the short a strip, they would say: “The letter A says /a/.” Then they say the letter sound twice and the picture name: “/a/, /a/, apple; /a/, /a/, alligator,” etc. **NOTE: For letter X, the first picture is “x-ray” and the other three pictures end with the X sound.
My kinders also like to tap out the syllables as they say the picture names. If the tapping on the table is distracting, I have them tap the syllables on their legs or tummies (or really any body part will work!! :)
Students can also work on their strips while the teacher is doing a running record with one student or as an early finisher task.
Included: 31 letter strips - 26 alphabet letters PLUS 5 long vowel strips
