Do you need an intervention for your kiddos that are struggling to learn their letters? Here is the perfect tool for you! ... The Alphabet Trace Book!
This Alphabet Trace Book was inspired from reading Jan Richardson’s, The Next Step in Guided Reading.
In her book, Jan Richardson suggests that students that do NOT know at least 40 (combined) capital and lower case letters, they should trace an alphabet book EVERY DAY! She also suggests that students trace using only their finger, NOT a pencil or other tool. It is also suggested that they begin with only the letters in their name and then add from there once they have mastered the letters in their name.
I “tab” the cards for the letters of their name with a little sticky note. Therefore, I have a book made for each student that needs to use it. However, you could use two different color sticky notes and two students can share one book...yellow for John and blue for Suzy.
When the student traces each letter have them say the name of the letter as they trace it with their finger. Then they touch the picture that represents the letter sound. (J...j...jet O...o...octopus H...h...hippo N...n...nickel)
I always model for them first and have them copy me!
The pictures that represent each letter sound match those from Jack Hartmann's "Learning Letter Sounds" song!
