Write The Room – Alphabet is a fun and engaging scavenger hunt for letters. You can use the uppercase set, or the lowercase set or mix them up for of a different challenge. You can use 5 letters at a time or more, the game is easily differentiated and very adaptable to the needs of your group. The versatility of this activity is also great because you can use the cards and the game over and over and it can be quite different each time the kids play it.
How To Play
Choose the letters you would like the students to focus on.
Place those letter cards around your classroom. You can place them on desks, table tops, on walls (I use painters tape), you can also place them in a pocket chart (this works great, if you would like the activity to be more of a literacy center where the kids stay in a particular spot).
Once the letter cards have been placed, have the students, equipped with a recording sheet, pencil, eraser, and clipboard, move through the classroom looking for the letter cards.
When they find a letter card, they say the letter name, say the sound the letter makes and find the letter on their recording sheet. Then, they can record the letter that they find on their recording sheet.
Students then continue look for the rest of the letters, they continue this process until they find all the letters or time permits.
There are several different ways that this activity can be differentiated to meet the needs of all of your learners, these are just a few.
Use specific letters for the scavenger hunt
Use only the vowels
Have students travel around in partner pairs or small groups.
Choose different amounts of the cards depending on the challenge you want. More for more of a challenge, fewer cards to scaffold the learning for the next time students do the activity.
Use only uppercase letters,
Use only lowercase letters.
Use a combination of both uppercase and lowercase letters.
Have students choose the letters they would like to include in the scavenger hunt.
This set contains two sets of letter cards and uppercase and a lowercase set. There is are 5 different recording sheets provided as well. There is a trace the letters, write the letters for the uppercase letters and a trace the letters and write the letters recording sheet for the lowercase letters. I have also included a blank recording sheet for the pack as well. You can use the blank recording sheet if you decided to choose specific letters in your Write The Room activity.
