An anchor chart
The first packet (print, collate, staple) contains the materials necessary for planning the alphabet book. This includes:
An optional cover for student materials
Investigating published alphabet books – the exploration of mentor texts (notice and note)
Brainstorming ideas for the autobiography
Alphabet note taking pages (A-Z)
A text features chart for use in student writing AND illustrating too
The second packet (print, collate, staple) contains the materials necessary for publishing the alphabet book. This includes:
A title page (title, author, date, illustration)
The alphabet page templates – 13 pages in all
There are MANY published alphabet books. Put together a BIG collection for students to peruse and investigate. The published books serve as mentor (or anchor) texts.
Students absolutely LOVE this unit and will BEG you to LET them work. Really.
Allow classmates time to share the autobiographies. Students will know each other in a more exact and meaningful way.
Perhaps you'd prefer a different version of a student autobiography.
