This unit is a somewhat eclectic collection of work that is not usually explored in Standard English classes. With the adoption of CCSS standards, there seems to be more room for under-represented forms of literature and self-expression. In fact, the exploration of these under-represented forms, along with under-represented artists and writers, seems to be encouraged. Coupled with new standards in Critical Thinking and Literary Analysis, this unit gives students a great opportunity to synthesize information and create a “voice” all their own.
This unit loosely follows the CSU format for Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC) modules and includes activities for unit background, previewing, predicting, vocabulary development, annotation, synthesis, and writing tasks.
