The attached file is a two week-long lesson plan designed to go with the first grade Common Core Curriculum Map Unit "The Amazing Animal World.” In my progression, this would be week 3 and 4; however, they do not have to be taught in this particular order. This lesson plan is a 10 day plan along with two student packets with cover pages and student activity pages. I have included both PDF and Word versions of each document if you would like to make changes to them.

The plans include: focus standards, vocabulary, essential questions, I can statements and technology links.

The focus standards are:

RI.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

RI.1.7 Use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas

SL.1.2 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.

SL.1.4 Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.

W.1.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of "how-to" books on a given topic and use them to write a sequence of instructions).

W.1.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

Students will explore Steve Jenkins website and videos to learn how he is inspired to write his books and how he creates his unique illustrations. They will read books by Steve Jenkins to learn about animals and also how to write about animals. They will answer questions about Steve Jenkins, his books and complete graphic organizers using the graphics and information in his books. In the second week of this study, students will go through the process that Steve Jenkins does to research an animal and create a cut paper illustration. I have included a student packet for the reading week and also a packet that will take the students through the writing process.

The books I used for the lessons are (these could be changed):

“What do You Do with a Tail Like This?” by Steve Jenkins

“Biggest, Strongest, Fastest” by Steve Jenkins

“Actual Size” by Steve Jenkins

“What Do You Do When Something Wants to Eat You?” by Steve Jenkins
