Take the class outside for a city wide Amazing Race based on Math! It is in the same spirit of the TV show with the same name and is designed to promote critical thinking skills, communication skills, and teamwork. Working in groups they will solve clues that will lead them to different locations across the city of your choosing. This Math one I have conducted in both Agassiz and Abbotsford, BC, Canada. I have conducted another version as well for Chemistry in Vancouver BC, Canada. I have provided both my original version used in Abbotsford as well as a modified version so that you can add your own locations for the city you occupy or want to do the race in.
Description of the types of Cards:
Detour Card - These cards will provide students with the choice of two different math problems. Teams choose and solve the problem they feel they can do the fastest.
Road Block - These cards will provide students with only one problem. They are not given a choice.
Pit Stop - This card provides teams with the final destination.
Route Info - These cards provide students with the answers to the Detour and Road Block Cards. Each Route Info card then has the next location they are to travel to as well as a task they are suppose to complete at that location. Example of a task - take a selfie
Two Ways of Running it:
You can run the game two different ways depending on the number of volunteers you have to work with
1. Little to no volunteers: Game still works perfectly if there are no other adults or older students helping you out. I dropped the teams off at the starting location of the race (they were not given the location information beforehand) and provided each team with a large yellow envelope (with the Amazing Race logo of course) that contained four smaller yellow envelopes (race logo once again for authenticity - kids love that!). Envelopes were also labelled Detour, Road Block, Route Info, and Pit Stop.
Therefore at the start of the race each team had all the cards (in their appropriately labelled envelopes). The teams then needed to solve the math problems at the start and then plan the best possible route to each location where they needed to complete the route info task I had given them. I have made extra route info cards with wrong answers so that teams can't just cheat. The problems must be solved because they lead to a specific route info card that they need to use. The file has a answer key indicating which route info card goes with which detour or road block.
2. Plenty of volunteers: Play it like the actual race. Have volunteers waiting at each location to give the team their next clue. In this case you will not need to use the extra route info cards that provide the wrong answer.
-Yellow envelopes can be purchased anywhere and you can easily print off the Amazing Race logo and glue it on there. While this part is not necessary kids love it when you make it as authentic as possible.
In the file you will find:
-a template of the race cards with all the detours and road blocks filled out (based on polynomials, measurement, surface area, and trigonometry) as well as you have the opportunity to fill in the route info cards with your own locations and tasks. A common and simple task I have them do once they are at a location is to take a funny selfie there.
-an answer key so you know the answers to the detour and road block problems.
-a worksheet for teams to show their work for each problem as they travel
-my original copy of the race conducted in Abbotsford. Feel free to use the clues or to insert your own. Locations were common like the library, mall, city hall, school, etc.
Kids had a blast and their parents couldn't thank me enough! It's an amazing way (no pun intended!) to get kids excited about math.
