PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Have your students think critically about why deforestation happens in the Amazon Rainforest and why it is a problem by having them participate in a "mini-debate" activity. This lesson plan will provide context for the mini-debate by teaching the issue of deforestation using the Dr. Seuss classic, The Lorax. In this activity, students read a scenario in which plans are being made to build an iron ore mine in part of the Amazon Rainforest. One scenario is written from the perspective of a young Brazilian man in favor of building the mine, and another is from the perspective of an Amazon native against the mine. Included here are a detailed lesson guide, guided notes, a mini-debate worksheet and rubric, and background readings for both sides of the debate.
