Product Description
This lesson focuses on the Puerto-Rican American poet Tato Laviera's poem that celebrates being both American and of Puerto-Rican descent, and how this idea of dual identity fits in with the works of other writers who were writing about the experience of first-generation immigrants to America. The lesson relates to works by Randolph Bourne, Anzia Yezierska, and Mary Antin, and connects to the idea of a cultural continuum that is broader than the idea of the 'melting pot.' The poem is also connected, thematically and stylistically, to the "In America" song sequence from West Side Story.
