This is an activity which introduces students to the history of war in a thematic manner. Students will have an opportunity to examine America's war history to ultimately answer one key question: In what way have America's motives for war changed? The focus here will be to examine three major concepts: Expanionism, Isolationism and Interventionism.
This activity is a group activity with no evaluative purpose. Its intention is to provide a broad scope of American war history to explain the current state of America's foreign policy. They may use the internet or books to conduct the research. The entire activity takes roughly 2-3 periods. This is a good precursor to another activity available (America Goes to War- Culminating Activity).
This is part of a larger Unit plan which then focuses largely on America's war history since WWII and how America's foreign policy changed since then.
